Vilma Saarela
Portrait and Event Photographer
My journey into photography began back in 2010, when my sister handed me her old Canon 550D with a small, lightweight kit lens. What started as a fun hobby quickly evolved into a serious side business during my studies in Turku, where I graduated in 2016 as both a photographer and graphic designer. My very first wedding shoot was my sister’s, and even though I was clearly inexperienced at the time, I loved every moment of it. That day sparked something in me, and I spent countless hours afterwards studying wedding photography and how others captured those magical, fleeting moments.
From there, I started taking on a wide range of photography work, from real estate to family sessions, pet portraits, and everything in between. Each assignment brings its unique challenges and clients, and that variety is something I truly enjoy. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to meet so many wonderful people through photography, and every encounter has helped me grow both as a person and an artist.
My approach is always to tailor each shoot to the individual client, and I’m genuinely proud of the feedback that comes from that. Hearing how much the final gallery means to someone is the most rewarding part of this work – and something that continues to bring me joy time after time.

About Me
My story began in 1993 in Lohja, Finland. I’m the youngest of three siblings and probably the most artistically inclined when it comes to turning creativity into a career. After spending several years abroad, I’ve now settled in a quiet, forested corner of Espoo, Finland. I share a small house with my nearly four-year-old retro pug, Loki. Our home is surrounded by nature, which means we get to enjoy all its beauty right at our doorstep, which is something that’s endlessly inspiring for someone like me who loves to create.
Alongside photography, I have a deep appreciation for all forms of art. These days, I also work as a 3D Artist in the gaming industry and as a graphic designer, which keeps my creative energy flowing in new directions.
My passion for photography really began to take shape in 2013, during our very first photography course at school. Before that, I had been playing around with an old Canon 550D my sister gave me, but during those lessons, I realised I actually had a decent eye for composition and light. Not long after, I bought my first mirrorless camera, the EOS 6D, and never looked back. My first wedding gig was, fittingly, at my sister’s wedding, closing the circle between a casual hobby and the beginning of a professional path.
Since earning my first vocational qualification in 2016, I’ve had the pleasure of working with dozens of incredible clients and fellow professionals. My clients come from all walks of life, and it’s always a privilege to be invited into someone’s story, even just for a moment, to create something memorable together. Whether I’m photographing for a private client or a larger company, each project matters. Every assignment gives me a chance to learn, grow, and refine my craft.
I would describe my shooting style as natural and warm. While I do enjoy a great studio session now and then, I feel most at home outdoors in natural light, especially during golden hour, when the sun casts a soft, dreamy glow around everything. That’s why I often suggest a second round of portraits in the evening for my wedding couples, when the sun is just about to set. It’s the perfect time for more relaxed, intimate shots after the excitement of the day has settled a bit.
I also believe that kindness and approachability are a big part of what I bring to every shoot. I genuinely enjoy being around people, which helps a lot, especially during weddings or family portraits, where it’s so important that everyone in front of the camera feels at ease. Some of the best feedback I’ve received has come from people who told me they were nervous or even dreading the session, only to find out it was surprisingly easy and even fun, just because I was so easy to talk to.
These days, I split my time between photography and 3D art, not wanting to let go of either. Both fuel my creativity in different ways and bring so much joy into my everyday life. If you feel like I might be the right person to help tell your story, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s sit down, have a chat, and see how we can bring your vision to life.
Hope to meet you soon!
Yours truly,
Vilma
